St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Museum of American Art (MMAA) is proud to present ART HERE: Get Out the Vote on September 13 at pm. The event will feature an art exhibition with the winners of the American Institute of Graphic Arts’ “Get Out the Vote” poster design competition, music on the patio and complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Poster art from the 24 winners will be displayed in physical form and also digitally projected on the walls of the MMAA’s raw gallery space.

In addition to non-partisan voter oriented art, the patio will feature musical performances by Solid Gold, Birthday Suits, Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lappelles and A Night In the Box. This will be the last event held on the patio in the 2008 season. In the event of unfavorable weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the raw gallery space.

With a goal of registering 10,000 new voters, MPIRG will be on hand to register everyone of voting age in attendance. MPIRG is a student-directed, non-partisan group that empowers and trains students and engages the community to take collective action in the public interest throughout the state of Minnesota.

Tickets for this event are currently on pre-sale for $10 courtesy of Indie Tickets on our website. Student Tickets will be available at the door the night of the event for $5. Events at the MMAA have been selling out since early July. Purchasing advance tickets is highly recommended.

AIGA has invited designers from across the United States to create nonpartisan posters and YouTube submissions that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote for a presidential candidate in the 2008 general election. an AIGA Design for Democracy initiative since the 2000 election, enables designers to engage in the public arena by contributing to a coordinated voter mobilization campaign. By motivating eligible citizens to register and turn out on election day, Get Out the Vote fulfills an ongoing AIGA objective of demonstrating the value of design to the public, public officials and business by providing a clear call to action for an activity that is important to everyone.

Eight of the submitted posters will be selected to be professionally printed and distributed nationally. In addition, AIGA has commissioned sixteen AIGA Medalists to design posters that will be printed and distributed nationally as well. There will be sets of 24 (11" x 17") professionally printed posters made available to each AIGA chapter. Plus, any of the submitted posters are available as online PDFs for anyone to download, print and post independently.

The Walker Art Center will be showing all of the Get Out the Vote posters via video projection in the Bazinet Garden Lobby from August 19 through September 7, covering both the DNC and RNC events. In conjunction with the Republican National Convention, AIGA would like the professionally printed posters to be displayed in public spaces in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Other possible venues are: the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Weisman Museum, the MCAD Gallery and/or the atrium at Target headquarters. Other suggestions?

This could be a starting point for a poster hanging effort throughout the metropolitan area in September and October. AIGA could have events where volunteers were given posters to distribute in their communities. (Note: there are anti-posting ordinances is both Minneapolis and St. Paul, so the volunteers would have to ask private business owners if they could hang the posters in their store windows.) This could be a great opportunity to show the concern of designers in persuading people to participate in the voting process. This is just one suggestion for rallying the design community to participate in the Get Out the Vote effort. AIGA is open to other programming and event suggestions.

Hey everyone, my cousin Justine Nagan created this type film. This is great, and local. Here is some more info.

Typeface focuses on a rural Midwestern museum and print shop where international artists meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique.

It’s a Thursday afternoon and all is quiet in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Main Street is virtually empty, and there are “for rent” signs in several shop windows. In the last few years, the un-employment rate has been consistently on the rise in the region. Factories are leaving the heartland for cheaper locales and the little town of Two Rivers is struggling to re-invent itself. Jim VanLanen, one of the town’s most industrious entrepreneurs, began developing small museums as a way to bring tourists and industry to the area.

A few blocks off the main drag, in a section of the old cavernous Hamilton printing factory, a lone employee waits in the most popular of these museums for visitors to come. A couple of individuals straggle in every few days and then, come Friday, the museum fills with life. Machines hum, presses print, artists buzz about. One weekend each month, the quiet of Two Rivers is interrupted as carloads of artisans drive in from across the Midwest. The place comes alive as printmaking workshops led by, and filled with, some of the region’s top creative talent descend on the sleepy enclave. The museum is significant to the town’s history, but more importantly, its existence is critical to the worldwide design community who are passionate about the history of their craft and its function in the contemporary field. They believe the future of their industry may lie in the past.

Typeface, Kartemquin’s latest documentary in progress, will bring this fascinating junction of historical and contemporary, as well as rural and urban America together for enjoyment and contemplation. This film will be of interest to art and graphic design enthusiasts, to teachers as an educational resource, and to anyone looking for a film about perseverance and preservation in the heart of America.

Hey Dudes,

Hope break is going well.

There is talk of keeping the schools more closely knit and it might be kind of sweet if we could do something like a student exchange? By that I mean having two students change schools for a day or two just to see what the curriculum is like and stuff.

I volunteer CVA to switch with somebody. We could set up a buddy system too. Like somebody would exchange but their friend would show the newbie around. Two days would be nice, but we'd run into lodging problems. So let's just plan on a day?

Are there any volunteers? Two people from the same school, one to go to CVA for a day and one to show the CVA-er around.

"Following on from the success of two sold out publications, 'If You Could' have announced a very exciting year-long project. 2008 sees 'If You Could' release of a series of 24, two colour hand silk-screen printed artworks, with two being released on the 1st of every month. These B2 (700mm x 500mm), red and black screen prints will be responses to the question 'If you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?', and will be answered by an established and an emerging illustrator/designer."

These B2 (700mm x 500mm) two color screenprints will be available to buy for one month only for £40 / 55 euros / $80. After the month the amount sold will determine the edition and they will then be printed/editioned and then hand signed by the artist. My name is Lisa Musselman. I am the President of the AIGA Student Group at the Art Institutes International MN.

I wanted to run a few ideas by you all. At Ai's last AIGA meeting, it was discussed that we really want to get more involved with other local design schools. We discussed a few ideas of inter-school activities such as critiques or even dodgeball competitions. I'm wondering if any of you would like to pursue these or any other activities to get the local design schools interacting more. We would love to invite your groups to our school sometime during the next quarter (Jan - March). I'm thinking it would be in the evening - not during regular school hours. My group put this as a high priority on our "To Do List" for next quarter. Any thoughts/ideas?

Insights Lecture Input

Here's an e-mail from Heather Olson regarding the upcoming Insights Lecture Series.

"AIGA and Walker Art Center will again be co-sponsoring the Insights Lecture Series in 2008. I believe it will occur on Tuesday nights in March. The series features outstanding national and international designers with provocative viewpoints, and is held in the Walker auditorium.

Richelle Huff, an adjunct professor at the U of M, is helping plan the series, and has asked what we can do to encourage students to attend. Is it all about price? Transportation? Timing? Desired speaker list?

I know all of you appreciate it when the student member fee is discounted, both from the professional price and from the nonmember price. What price seems right for a 60-90 minute lecture presentation? Would a bus from your school help you get there? Is a 7 PM start time appropriate? Is there a designer out there whose work you are burning to see?"

As for my response, discounted price is always appreciated and a bus would be awesome! I think it would totally draw people in. We students are exhausted and a little sheep-esque... :)
As for speakers I would love to see Haley Johnson who did the "Looking Good for Jesus" chapsticks and bags. <--the kids love her!
The Method soap folks would be awesome too.
I think speakers that pertain to us is important. I think students have a finger on the pulse of new and cool. Other stuff is just not in our world, we aren't as exposed to the huge world of design as the grown ups. That's just my opinion, I'm sure others feel differently.

Any other suggestions?

exquisite poster

Hey guys,

Heather Olson had a sweet idea for us kids to do. An exquisite corpse poster. Check the link if you need a refresher on what an exquisite corpse is. It means cutting up dead bodies and creating a Frankenstein that is the ultimate designer! Jim Madson is in with the cops so we won't get arrested. JK JK JK JK

But seriously folks, we might do one in some sort of professional way, but I thought we could just do a test round.

The rules are, when the poster is passed to you, you can't change anything! You can add whatever you like and tweek the rules a little by putting outlines around the type, playing with color theory, etc. Don't feel pressured to do too much, like an hour's worth. Whoever feels it's finished go ahead and post. I'd like to it to go around to at least 7 different people. When you're done, post a gif and offer it to the next person.

So here's my start.t. Whoever wants it go for it! Let me know and I'll e-mail the file (oh, and what Illustrator version you have).

AMA 2007 Conference: Designature

i was fortunate enough to attend this year's American Marketing Association's annual conference in downtown st. paul today. this year's theme was Designature. basically...design-- how it can evoke an emotion in consumers, how it can build trust in a brand, and how design is evolving in business. i will have to say that i was a little leery about going; i presumed it would be a room full of suits talking about "synergy" and "cross platform who's-a-whats-its." much to my delight, it was really laid back and even better yet: it was inspirational.

the keynote speakers (of which there were three) covered the bases. from hotels to dish soap to computers, they all had really great things to say about their experiences in their respective industries. after all was said and done, i thought to myself: this theme never would have flown five years ago. people are becoming informed about design now. not only are we critical about what a product looks like, but now we want to know how it's made, how it functions, and what (if any) impact it has on our society, environment, family, etc. as a new designer i think it was absolutely phenomenal.

if i understood correctly the AMA was recording all of the speakers and plans to put up podcasts on the website shortly. feel free to check out the conference website or website of Minnesota AMA. i'll update when/if i notice they have been posted.

as a promotion: they always need volunteers for the event. keep your eyes peeled next fall. perks: free admission ($75), free lunch, free drinks, sponsor bag, amazing speakers.

is anyone else frustrated with the billing procedures of grand view lodge?

i signed up for the meal plan and they charged me during the week of camp, but only for about half of what i was expecting. the sunday of camp, a woman from GVL called saying they never got my fax, only my cover letter. (then how did they get my credit card number and charge me?!?!) i had a pleasant conversation with the woman on the phone. i assumed everything was taken care of; i just wasn't going to tell her that they undercharged me. (i'm a student, i need all the money i can get.

skip to now, THREE WEEKS LATER, and i checked my bank account and yesterday they charged me for the rest of the bill ($78). WHO DOES THAT?! i'm almost tempted to call and complain.

anyone else fed up?

Hi,
I'm thinking to get ultimate functionality out of this thing, we should use labels to label our blogs. It's at the bottom of your text field while posting.

That way, when someone wants to check events, they can click on the handy "events" label on the right hand side and it will show only event labeled posts.
So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE label your stuff.

otherwise just check the side and copy.

i heard about this site this after and took a look at it.

people develop color palettes things they're working on. they assign values, characteristics, words, etc. to all of the palettes. type any word into the search box and you're bound to find something good.

Student Exchange

Hi all! Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you chose a different school? Ever wanted to have the "Fargo" experience (without the woodchipper...hehe)? We here at Minnesota State University Moorhead would like to extend an offer for the Student Exchange with any of the AIGA chapter schools. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments we're excited to hear from you. I have some ideas of how this could be cost effective and an enjoyable experience.

Hello fellow AIGA-MN student members,

For my first post on this blog of sorts I would like to direct everyone towards GOOGLE BOOKS. Awesome stuff––lots of free information...it's kind of like a library...or the Internet, but in book form...on the Internet.

Also, I'd like to share the work of Ryan Waller, a designer whose work can be seen on the walls of art galleries just as easily as on a television as a PSA for the city of New York. Very nice, diverse work which can be perceived as art or design, depending on the context--though a High Modern approach/aesthetic, to say the least.

"Daniel Eatock is a London-based designer known for his conceptual approach to solving traditional client problems as well as those of his own choosing. Eatock graduated from the Royal College of Art and worked as a designer at the Walker Art Center before returning to England to create Foundation 33 and most recently Eatock Ltd. His work has consistently employed a systematic but not necessarily dogmatic rigor that privileges the elemental over the extraneous—a philosophy neatly embodied in his motto: “Say YES to fun & function & NO to seductive imagery & colour!” His work for entertainment and cultural clients ranges from such projects as the graphic identity and promotion for the British television hit Big Brother to a street exhibition of Warhol billboards for Channel 4 to a collaboration with artists Oliver Payne and Nick Relph for an exhibition catalogue with sound chips, a flip book, handwritten notes, and a cover wrapped in the upholstery fabric used on London transit seating. In an effort to foster cross-collegiate design happenings, I'd like to extend an open invitation to Duluth. We have many unique shops and restaurants like the Electric Fetus, Ragstock, Pizza Lucé and Hell's Kitchen. Cough.

Designer and founding principal Bill Thorburn of Carmichael Lynch Thorburn in Minneapolis will be speaking at the University of Minnesota Duluth next Tuesday, October 16, as part of UMD's Art + Design Lecture Series. The lecture takes place at 6pm in the Tweed Museum of Art.

Bill Thorburn became founding principal of Carmichael Lynch Thorburn (CLT)in 1996. CLT, Minneapolis, specializes in the design needs of clients looking to establish their identities and build their brands.

Thorburn has 20 years of internationally recognized design expertise. He started way back then with a fine arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. With CLT, Thorburn exercises his vision for strategic, powerful, lasting design every day. His list of client work is impressive: Nike, Microsoft, Harley-Davidson, Neiman Marcus, Dayton's, Caribou Coffee, ESPN, and Porsche, just to name a few. Bill Thorburn's design work is included in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum of Art in London, and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. He has also had individual exhibits in Japan and London.

Any fun design camp stories?
My friends and I watched David Bowie videos and laughed and laughed at China Girl (don't worry, I love david bowie none the less).

My favorite speaker was Carin Goldberg for sure. Although we got to meet Mr. Mann. He was very nice and he showed us a phone picture of his cat, Licks. Maybe we could make it into a lolcat. "My dad iz famus dezigner!"

ever since apple came out with its current generation of the ipod shuffle, their marketing stratagem has been "wearable color." i think all the colors are great-- the orange is waaaaay better than the ipod mini's orange/brown/vomit color-- remember that? so for the past couple of months they've been using the line "put some color on." i think it's fun and funky and really appropriate for the audience they're trying to target.

i can't help buy cringe every time i hear it though. i know it's totally nerdy of me to be such a nit-picker, but come on apple! i learned back in middle school that you should never end a sentence with a preposition. finally! i found a grammatically-correct shuffle ad this morning and i just had to post it somewhere. i wonder what made them change.

reading it, it just doesn't have the same effect. grammar has made it tragically unhip.

Interface Lift

Hi Guys,

My hard drive broke a couple weeks ago and haven't been able to post.
It was very scary but luckily (or miraculously) I had backed up my art and music on an external hard drive 2 weeks prior!
So BACK UP YOUR STUFF!

Anyway, so I was looking for new icons for my applications and stumbled across InterfaceLift. They have a ton icons (you'll have to dig for the best) people upload and the directions for replacing the old. Some ones like the Finder and System Preferences are tricky.

I recommend Thai Style.

A firm: Pheist also makes some super awesome ones and "skins" as well for OSX: Pheist GUIs.

Hi all!

This is an interesting and valuable discussion going on! I graduated from CVA in December 06, and was able to find a job right before I graduated. I agree that it is a really competitive industry, and a highly saturated job market too for entry level designers. Micheal is right about getting out there to things like CWC, and check out the job postings on the AIGA site, and others. I think companies like Larsen are great that they are so involved int he community, but that also means that they are swamped with applications, and there are plenty of other firms out there who are less visible that might be more likely places to look.

I think the trick to getting a job is to be constantly looking, and to be in the right place, or calling the right place at the right time. I think experience is great, and most places do really value that, but internship are only good to a point, if you have a bunch of internships, you wouldn't be getting the same extended experience or responsibilities as say working in house at Wells Fargo for a year. There are plenty other option outside of design firms that help build up experience that can get you in the door.

In my situation when I was hired I had four months of inHouse experience, and a nine month internship under my belt as I was graduating. But I do know people who were hired straight out of school who hadn't worked a day in their lives ...so i think it depends!

if there is one thing i have learned so far about the creative industry it is this: it's not about what you know, rather, it's about who you know. i always tried to tell myself otherwise, hoping that my creativity alone could land me a job after graduation. after meeting with firms, it seems like the only thing that matters, when they look for new graduates, is not so much their design skills as much as it is about whether or not that applicant's personality would fit in well with their company.

i've spent the last couple weeks doing a self-initiated circuit of informational interviews at firms around town and it seems like they all say the same thing. they realize brand new graduates won't have the experience and knowledge of a seasoned professional. they have all emphasized doing as many internships as possible-- even internships after graduation are a good idea. when talking to people at Larsen, the HR woman said that they tend to hire a lot of their interns. honestly, i would really recommend Larsen to anyone. they are very supportive of design students (they are the only firm in town that i know of that gives out an annual design scholarhip) and several of their staff are really involved in AIGA. Heather (the head of HR) said that their policy is: if they like the person, they'll find a spot for them.

granted, i know not every place in town is as supportive. my advise: get your name out there. go to informational interviews and aiga events. (i plan on going to the next Cocktails with Creatives on the 12th if anyone else wants to join me.) form a contact base by collecting business cards-- there are people in the industry willing to help you out.

I was invited to join and thought it might be interesting for me to contribute...especially since I just graduated from Bemidji State with a degree in Design Technology, specializing in graphic design and multimedia. Especially interesting...as I am still unemployed.

It's not that I haven't been trying, but let me tell you, the Minneapolis job search for designers is COMPETITIVE. You see, I gave up on the job search momentarily as my great uncle may have had a job for me in Reno, being a marketing director. Unfortunatly, that job fell through as his board of directors decided they wanted a SENIOR marketing director, that which I am not. It would have been fun to work under the guy who held such accounts as Buick, the PGA tour and Tiger Woods (I didn't know this when he first contacted me). Everyone wants experience and I don't have the experience that they want. So it's been tough.

I thought I would pay my contributions as insight on the job market, any tips and tricks I might figure out while I work my way towards finding my experience.

i don't know about you guys, but i am always amazed when i see an actually beautiful website. i don't know a thing about how to do this myself — it seems like a lot of math — but there needs to be more of it.

and speaking of interactive or web design, that is one of the things i'd like to get a speaker to talk to us about — or maybe even lead a workshop. my school theoretically offers some classes, but they are very difficult to get into.

thank you for the invitation. i feel like there is never much interaction between design students at the U, much less with design students at various schools throughout the Cities.

i hope this is in line with the kind of stuff you wanted to see on here, audry. i just finished reading "How to Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul" earlier this week. granted, it's not that exciting of a read, but the author does have some pretty good things to say. there is a section (towards the beginning) about compiling and assembling your portfolio, as well as contacting and interviewing at firms. i'd recommend it to any soon-to-be graduate. it sells for around $20, but google books has the whole thing online if you just want to read chunks of it at a time.
